As a Pakistani it's always sad to see the strings both our militaries and politicians pull to make an intense feeling that war is just on the doorstep while sacrificing a couple hundred just to earn more war money.  
May these conflicts end and we both live in harmony.

This is going to be huge post lol, here we go.

It certainly is an interesting situation. I am almost completely sure that India will acquiesce to whatever China demands once it is clear US is not gonna intervene (Modi Government is counting on Biden, a lot!). I think it is not at all about the Ladakh and LAC territorial dispute but the blockage of Chinese vessels in South China Sea and Indian Ocean. Nothing will happen.

China will keep piling on pressure and Indians will keep compromising just like it was in the 60s.

This will sound biased but Indian army has been incredibly inept compared to its global counter-parts. They are comparable to Arab militaries in this regard. They have consistently struggled to reach functional parity with a significantly smaller foe (much like Arabs with Israel). Out of 4 wars with Pakistan, they have never once managed to take the initiative.

*Israel has been more successful than Pakistan because of how well funded and organized it has been since its conception. Jews are known to be excellent administrators after all.*

So their most decisive victory was Liberation of Bangladesh in 1971 where the Pakistani Eastern Command was surrounded and made to surrender. So let's discuss that.

Here too, it was Pakistan which took initiative with the objective of putting pressure on Western Front so that inevitable losses at the Eastern Front are mitigated by launching air sorties in the West. It didn't work but the Western Theater was a disaster for India nonetheless.

For example, they lost Chamb sector in Kashmir and were under immense pressure along the whole border. This territory was never returned to India and is now AJK.

Another attack was launched in Poonch sector which was driven back by Indians and they actually created an inverse bulge into Pakistan but they pulled back since their position was in danger of being surrounded.

In 1948, Pakistan and India had a rough numerical parity. The war was heavily in favor of Pakistan which was only stopped after India went to UN. In 1965 and 1971, India outnumbered Pakistan slightly more than 3 : 1 at the Western front (and 5 : 1 on the Eastern front in '71). They struggled to maintain their lines in the West with this advantage.

In 1962, China outnumbered India around 3 : 1 during the war for Aksai Chin. India effectively surrendered in 4 weeks and accepted all terms of the Chinese.

This proves a simple fact that Indian army depends too heavily on this steam-rolling tactic. They really struggle when there is parity. I don't know why exactly but war analysts that I have read say it is the lack of initiative from their junior/middle command that is the issue.

This idea that India is focused on China and Pakistan is a mere footnote is a myth. India has absolutely no threat projection against China. Take a look here:

The Indian Army is divided into 6 operational commands, FIVE are stationed against Pakistan. It has 14 Corps, 10 are deployed on Western and Northwestern Border with Pakistan. Out of 32 divisions, 26 are deployed to counter Pakistan with ONLY 3 for China and 3 for Bangladesh (the fifth-longest land border in the world). It has 3 mechanized infantry divisions, all three against Pakistan. Three armored divisions, all against Pakistan.

Similarly, its Air Force is divided into 5 operational commands with three purely aimed at Pakistan. This makes 36 air stations and 46 squadrons whereas Pakistan has TOTAL 36 squadrons.

India would struggle in a conventional war with Pakistan as long as we do not suffer from incompetent commanders and bad luck in battle. With some luck and diplomacy, Pakistan has and can manage to nibble on Kashmiri territory as well without any intervention.

So if a hypothetical situation arises, Pakistan should pressure India but I cannot say if we actually will with the current Pakistani power setup. Imran Khan is too much of a pacifist and the Pakistan military today is far too docile to openly challenge the civilian government.

TL,DR: There is no way India will challenge PLA openly. Indian army just isn't organized that way. In current state-of-affairs, India has no choice but deescalate and compromise. Pakistan should but wont interfere if it were to happen IMO.

Pakistan threatened to hit back after strikes overnight by India, as the two nuclear-armed neighbors faced off in the wake of a deadly attack on tourists last month that New Delhi blamed on Islamabad.

Despite the uptick in violence, including cross-border shelling Wednesday, the rivals appeared to be calibrating their moves to avoid a descent into full-blown conflict after decades of relative peace.

India said Wednesday that retaliatory strikes on nine locations across Pakistan and Pakistan-controlled Kashmir were “focused, measured and non-escalatory in nature,” and based in part on intelligence that further attacks, like the one which killed 26 people in Indian-administered Kashmir in April, were imminent.

New Delhi didn’t give a death toll from the overnight attacks but said it carried out precise strikes on training camps associated with past and planned attacks on India and avoided collateral damage. 

Islamabad said 26 civilians were killed in the strikes and that it brought down five Indian jets. India hasn’t commented on that claim for which Pakistan didn’t provide evidence. Locals in some parts of Kashmir reported seeing planes crash overnight.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s office on Wednesday called India’s actions an unprovoked and unlawful act of war and said that the country’s army has been authorized to “undertake corresponding actions.”

Pakistan denies involvement in the attack by militants last month.

The U.S. has sought to persuade India and Pakistan to defuse tensions. But while U.S.-India ties have strengthened in recent years, Washington’s influence over Islamabad has waned over the past decade as China has become Pakistan’s closest ally.

India and Pakistan have exchanged small-arms fire along their border for several days since the April attack in Pahalgam, a valley in Indian-administered Kashmir. Last night, the two sides began cross-border shelling, which India said had killed 15 of its civilians.

Political experts said it was difficult to gauge exactly how Pakistan would respond to India. Pakistan’s army, long a powerful political player in the country, could see a conflict with India as bolstering its standing, but the country is also in the grip of an economic and political crisis which could hold it back from a full-bore response.

“The Indians are turning to the United States to restrain and limit Pakistani action it seems,” said Asfandyar Mir, a senior fellow at the Stimson Center, but, “U.S. influence on Pakistan in this moment may be limited.”

In one village, 12 miles south of the Indian Kashmir city of Srinagar, residents said they were jolted awake late at night by the deafening roar of what they said sounded like jet fighters overhead. Moments later, a thunderous explosion shook the area as villagers witnessed a burning aircraft spiraling from the sky.

“I was convinced our village was under attack,” said local resident Mohamad Mumeeb. “When I looked up, I saw this enormous fireball falling from the sky.”

Police cordoned off an area of the village Wednesday morning while the smell of aviation fuel filled the air.

India’s action against Pakistan, while anticipated, took the two nuclear-armed rivals toward a deeper military confrontation, political analysts said. The two countries, which have fought three wars mainly over the disputed territory, were last in open conflict over two decades ago.

Kashmir was India’s only Muslim-majority state until New Delhi took tighter administrative control and downgraded it to a union territory in 2019. The countries share the region but both claim it in its entirety.

The April attack in Indian-administered Kashmir was the country’s worst attack on civilians since the wide-scale assault on Mumbai in 2008. Without providing evidence, India has said the militants were associated with U.S.-designated terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba, the Pakistani group behind the Mumbai attacks.

“Our intelligence monitoring of Pakistan-based terror modules indicated that further attacks against India were impending,” said Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri in a news conference Wednesday. “There was thus a compulsion both to deter and to pre-empt.”

The escalating tensions come when both countries have been largely focused on domestic concerns. Pakistan has been dealing with a deepening political and economic crisis in recent years, while India has been focused on expanding its manufacturing base to take advantage of the U.S. pivot away from dependence on Chinese goods. 

The current Pakistani army chief, Gen. Asim Munir, is seen as taking a harder line on India. In a speech the military leader gave just days before the attack in Indian Kashmir, he portrayed the India-Pakistan conflict as a war of religions with no common ground, and called Kashmir “our jugular vein.”

“We will not forget it,” he said.

According to The NY Times this morning, two of India's jets crashed (were shot down?) after bombing Pakistan.  That allows Pakistan to save some face here.   

These conflicts are sometimes most at risk of spiraling out of control when one side has a major military success and the other is unable to inflict pain back with a restrained/moderate military response, e.g., normal jet bombing and artillery.  Side two might elect to ratchet up war-making dramatically and unreasonably.

Im from India, its just a media and misinformation war at this moment with both armies killing civilians inadvertently.

We are still talking about the terror strike. There are 15+ civilians killed in Poonch dist on the Indian side of LoC this included children and elderly women as well due to heavy shelling.

This is quite complex, IMO. FWIW, there was a terrorist attack by Pakistan-based terrorists in 2019 (in Pulwama). India responded by bombing terrorist camps in Balakot, but the effectiveness of that is debated. In any case, Balakot isn't a major city.

This time though - India seems to have "had enough" of such terror attacks and have responded much more strongly (which is justified IMO). Its possible that India modeled the Oct 7 terror attacks' response in Israel. Bahawalpur, one of the cities struck, is the 13th biggest city in Pakistan. But more importantly, even before the missile strike, India has stopped the supply of river water that flows from India to Pakistan. A Reuters article says that those rivers supply up to 80% of Pakistan's agricultural land. So suspending such water flow is basically a death sentence to Pakistan's agriculture, which in turn spells doom for its people and economy.

Now that India has struck missiles inside Pakistan, it is possible for the latter to respond with its own attacks. Otherwise, that'll be a new red line. However, we've to watch the scale of Pakistan's response (if they respond). Usually, things calm down after such back and forth attacks, but this time we've to see if the river flows are re-opened as well.
